At Delph Side, we promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. Our aim is to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to become successful members of society, fully prepared for life in Modern Britain.
At Delph Side, children are listened to and we teach them the importance of listening to and respecting the views of others. Pupils know that their voice is important; there are many occasions when they are asked to express their opinions. For example, children recently voted for the design of our new sports kit. We hold mock elections to select new School Councillors and the Council meet regularly to air their opinions and ideas. We are also involved in SHARE Pupil Parliament events. This helps our pupils to understand the democratic process and how they can influence decision making. Throughout the curriculum, children are taught how to argue and defend a point of view and they learn to value the importance of team-work and collaboration.
The Rule of the Law
School rules are central to creating the warm and happy environment here at Delph Side. Children are taught the difference between right and wrong. They learn that this is crucially important to ensuring their own well-being and safety both in school and in their wider communities. At the beginning of the school year, each class creates their own 'Class Charter' - the children are taught that these rules protect us and there must be consequences if they are broken. We help children to manage their own behaviour and take responsibility for their actions. Our Behaviour Policy is embedded to ensure fairness and consistency across school. All children in school are assigned a house team and they compete each week to collect the most gold coins for their team. We invite parents to celebrate our star pupils with us during a Gathering Assembly every Friday afternoon.
At Delph Side, we strongly encourage children to make choices and understand their rights and responsibilities. We provide boundaries to ensure that these choices can empower our pupils. In class, teachers allow opportunities for children to have the freedom to decide how they would like to achieve a goal. Each half term, children are given a choice of extra-curricular activities they might like to attend. Children in the EYFS access 'Woodland School' every Monday; this allows them multiple opportunities for risk taking and critical thinking.
Mutual Respect & Tolerance
Respect is a embedded within the ethos of our school. Children feel that they are respected and in return, they are expected to treat others how they would wish to be treated. Children are taught about respect during assemblies and with JIGSAW lessons. Children at Delph Side learn that we live in a diverse country and they are taught to celebrate differences between themselves and others. In November 2017, we marked Anti-Bullying Week by celebrating the theme 'All Different, All Equal'. During RE lessons, children learn about; Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Sikhism. They spend time comparing and contrasting how the beliefs and values associated with each religion compare to their own. In January 2018, we held ‘Faith Week’. Each day we welcomed a visitor from a different faith and they gave us a real insight into their own values and beliefs. Children also enjoy visiting several places of worship. Children in EYFS learn about celebrations such as Diwali & Chinese New Year.
At Delph Side we are always vigilant in preventing children being exposed to extremist views, especially by visitors to school.
