Year 1 have embraced learning all about Black History month.
We started by enjoying daily stories that shared an insight into black culture, inspirational black people, and how black people have not always been treated equally.
We have learnt about Floella Benjamin and her journey to England all the way from Trinidad. The children learnt how she was treated unfairly when she first arrived and how people were unkind because of the colour of her skin. This provide us with a great discussion, talking about here feelings. We looked at our own, similarities and differences, agreeing we are all special and unique in our own ways and we should treat each other with kindness.
This week we have loved joining in with ‘Magic Hands’ singing and signing. It has celebrated inspiring black people such as Frank Bailey, the first black male firefighter in London and shared special songs celebrating inspirational black musicians. The songs have taught us about fairness, kindness and respect.
To end the week, the children have been creative using the significant Black History colours, celebrating the inspiring people we have learnt about.
