In Year 1, we have a mixture of teacher-led activities and child-led activities. Child-led activities are when the children learn through play and can choose what they would like to do. This week we have been #enjoying our new routine and have #embraced new challenges. Check out the photos for a snapshot of what the year 1 superstars have been up to during ‘Choosing Time’.

In art lessons, we have been learning about Pablo Picasso with Miss Simpkin so in the art area children have been practising their scissor skills to make funny faces in the style of Pablo Picasso. They have also created their own egg box dragons and dragon drawings from our class reading book The Adventures of Egg Box Dragon.

In History lessons, we are learning about explorers. We have been exploring hidden tricky/red words with magnify glasses and recording our findings like a real life explorer!

In maths lessons, we are learning to recognise and write numbers as words as well as the numerals. We have been using “say it” “make it” “write it” boards to have fun with play dough, while learning how number names are spelt.

Using the construction blocks, we have been making the teachers laugh by creating alien and nonsense words using the phonics sounds we know. This is helping us recall and remember our Read Write Inc sounds.

During Science lessons, we are learning about animals including humans so we have opened a vets in our classroom next to the reading corner. In the reading corner, there are many books to explore about all the different types of animals. We have been learning how to classify animals by type eg. fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Miss Kinsella shared a game on the interactive whiteboard that we have been using to understand why animals are classified into these categories.

I wonder what next week will bring…
