This term we have been focusing on Animals including Humans as our topic in year 1. The children have been learning the names of all the different animals and gaining scientific skills by classifying animals by type. We know what the key features of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish are and how they are different from one another. We have learnt this through self-initiated activities such as exploring hidden animals in illustrations and photographs with a magnifying glass and an explorer book , and through adult modelled games of “Guess what animal I am thinking of?” and interactive sorting and classifying games. We also used an ‘x-ray machine’ to gain a better understanding of invertebrates and vertebrates, looking at different skeletons of animals and insects. The children have wowed all their teachers with their knowledge this term and we are looking forward to learning more about animals and humans next term! #enjoy #embrace #evolve
