Year 1 experienced a real life school day as a Victorian today! Mrs Dell visited Delph Side to immerse the children in the strict environment of a Victorian school. The classroom tables were changed to rows of desks! Boys and girls were not allowed to sit together! She brought a cane and a very stern voice to ensure none of the children stepped out line. The children’s hand were expected for dirt. The children were expected to sit up straight, lay their hands on their laps and not to turn around! If they did Mrs Dell shouted and smacked her cane against the desk making a very loud noise. The children learnt about what subjects the Victorian’s focused on- the 3 R’s; Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic. We wrote on blackboards with a scratcher and follow a lot of repeating drills to read and remember words. If you made a mistake, you were embarrassed by your peers and teacher who made you wear a dunce hat and called you an idiot! We completed drills in the playground for our daily exercise, following strict instructions of how to move. We couldn’t believe how different school was back in the Victorian times!

In the afternoon, Mrs Dell shared a huge box of artefacts that she had collected from the Victorian times. The children had to match the item to the modern day item through a guessing game. Living in the Victorian times was hard work and simply tasks we do today were not so easy back then. Mrs Bell shared many items including a hair curler, a glove pincher, a malted drink whisk and a nut cracker. Many of these things we looked at we still use today but they look very different and are more practical. Thanks goodness for electricity.
