During their afternoon visit to Herd Farm, Year 3 learn about the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
Roundhouses
A highlight of our visit was certainly finding out about how roundhouses were built and getting to visit 2 different roundhouses designs. We couldn't believe that some were big enough to fit in all 210 children in our school!! We were not impressed with how their could be bugs living in the roof!!
Wattle and daub
We had a go at starting to build our own walls for a roundhouse using the wattle technique. We had to hammer our sticks into the ground and then weave the willow to make the walls. Some pretty impressive attempts at this.
Bronze Age and Iron Age tools
We then looked at how the tools changed into the Bronze Age and the Iron Age and how they had improved as different metals were used. It was much easier to make flour!! We even got to sit around the camp fire that was lit as it would have been in the Iron Age.
Warrior Training
We finished our day with some warrior training.......Iron Age style!!!
