During Religious Education this term, we are exploring Judaism by answering the question "Is Shabbat important to Jewish children?" We are learning to empathise with Jewish children by understanding what they do during Shabbat and why it is important to them. Abbey Owl introduced the topic wearing a kippah hat with some books to update our RE basket in the library. We discussed what different things we do during the week with some children sharing that they go swimming every Wednesday or play football with a team on a Sunday morning. We created a picture calendar to display what we all do on different days of the week. "Is there one day that is a family day or a rest day?" "Is there a day when they think more about God, if they believe in God." Lots of the children had many questions about what Abbey Owl had on her head. The children designed beautiful kippah hats of their own after exploring lots of different designs and colours of kippah hats. We watched a video exploring a day in the life of a Jewish child showing us how they spend their Friday evening and Saturday. We looked at Sabbath day activities, focusing on family time, the Shabbat meal and the synagogue. We talked about when we have special meals for special occasions. We used a live video of inside a synagogue to take a closer look at the features and used our new knowledge to label. Next week, we will be hosting a Shabbat afternoon in our classroom.
